Herøya Industripark AS, in collaboration with Yara Porsgrunn, is carrying out an extensive expansion and upgrade of Quay 1. The industrial park company owns the quay and is acting as the client for the project.
Lifting of heavy concrete elements
Last week, major lifts of concrete elements at Quay 1 were carried out by the main contractor Vest Betong AS.

“Quay 1 was extended using a large-element principle, with five concrete elements of up to 232 tonnes hoisted into place. The elements were produced at Skjerkøya on the opposite side of the fjord and transported by the crane vessel Taklift to the quay at Herøya,” says Rikard Vinningland from the contractor Vest Betong AS.
“The crane ship lowered the elements onto the piles standing in the water, carefully monitored by a geo-engineer using surveying equipment. The entire installation had to be completed within a defined time window without other vessels at the quay. The operation was successful.”

Completion before the end of the year
Project manager Stig Ove Hol at Sweco says the entire lifting operation was subject to detailed planning with comprehensive HSE-Q plans carried out by Vest Betong. “The project is continuing and will be completed before Christmas.”
