When SINTEF relocated to Herøya in 2020, the industrial community there gained close access to one of Europe’s largest independent research institutes. This has led to closer collaboration between researchers and industry, generating positive ripple effects for the region.
On Monday, 27 January, the company marked its 75th anniversary.
Competitive Customers
SINTEF contributes through research and technology development to help its customers improve and grow in the right direction.
Karsten Rabe, General Manager of SINTEF Industrial Process Design, emphasises the importance of working across the entire value chain. "We assist with everything from optimising industrial processes and implementing new technology or raw materials to developing new products. Our goal is always to help our customers improve and become more competitive."
Three Leading Expert Groups
The Industrial Process Design research group at Herøya consists of three expert groups covering a wide range of competencies:
- Process design and techno-economic analysis, including CCUS value chains
- Industrial digitalisation, data analysis, programming, and optimisation
- Industrial circular economy, specialising in powder and particle technology
SINTEF has also established and leads the DigiPro Centre, a national network for the digitalisation of the process industry. DigiPro plays a key role in developing recommendations for the digital transformation of Norwegian process industries towards 2030.
With 16 employees at Herøya and over 2,000 experts across Norway, SINTEF is a vital contributor to Norwegian industry and societal development.
Congratulations on the anniversary!
About SINTEF
SINTEF was founded in 1950 with the goal of bringing new knowledge from laboratories to industry—and to people like you and me.
Established by NTH—now NTNU—SINTEF was created as an extended arm to support industry. The name originally stood for "Selskapet for industriell og teknisk forskning ved Norges tekniske høgskole" (The Company for Industrial and Technical Research at the Norwegian Institute of Technology).
Today, SINTEF is one of Europe’s largest independent research institutes. More than 2,000 experts work daily on research and innovation alongside customers. Their contributions range from subsea pipelines that have generated billions for Norway to tailored nanomedicines, advanced construction solutions, CO₂ capture, and even food production in space.
For 75 years, SINTEF has strengthened Norway’s competitive edge.
